E-Scooter Insurance: What You Really Need – And Where the Traps Lie

In our workshop in Ludwigsburg, we hear it almost every week: "I have insurance, so why won't they cover this damage?" Whether it's a stolen scooter at the train station or a burnt-out battery after a heavy rain shower – there's a surprising amount of confusion around e-scooter insurance.

Sure, almost everyone knows by now that you can't hit the road in Germany without that little adhesive license plate on the rear fender. But what does it actually cover? Is comprehensive cover worth it for a €500 scooter? And why does the insurer decline claims if you used the wrong lock? Let's break it down from a mechanic's point of view.

For a broader overview on traffic laws, feel free to check our E-Scooter Regulations Guide.

1. MärzCut-off date

Every year on March 1st, the insurance sticker color changes. Riding with an old sticker after this date means no insurance coverage and is a criminal offense!

Liability vs. Partial Coverage: What's Covered?

It works pretty much like car insurance, just a whole lot cheaper. Third-party liability insurance is legally required. It steps in if you accidentally scratch a parked car or bump into a pedestrian in busy traffic. In short: it protects other people's wallets from your mistakes.

Partial coverage (Teilkasko) is optional – but in our workshop experience, it's often worth every cent. Why? Because it covers theft, fire damage, storm damage, and sometimes collisions with animals. But heads up: normal wear and tear on components like worn tires or misaligned brakes isn't covered by anyone. If your brakes squeak, check out our guide on adjusting e-scooter brakes properly.

Is Partial Coverage Worth It for Your E-Scooter?

Vorteile
  • ✓Financial protection if the entire scooter gets stolen
  • ✓Often covers wiring damage caused by animals or short circuits
  • ✓Low additional cost compared to basic liability (approx. €15-30/year)
Nachteile
  • ✗Requires a certified lock (No cheap cable locks!)
  • ✗Usually involves a deductible per claim (often €150)
  • ✗Does not cover vandalism or partial theft (e.g., just the display)

Theft: Why Insurance Companies Often Refuse to Pay

This is where we see the biggest disappointments. Someone chains their brand new Ninebot Max G2 D at the train station using a €5 combination lock. By afternoon, the scooter is gone – and insurance refuses payout. Why?

Almost all insurers require "adequate security" in their fine print. If a lock can be snipped in three seconds with basic wire cutters, it's considered gross negligence. We strongly recommend heavy-duty U-locks or hardened folding locks. Be sure to read our detailed guide on E-Scooter Theft & Insurance Pitfalls.

Warning Regarding Tuning & Modifications!

As soon as you tune your e-scooter via software or hardware to exceed 20 km/h, its road permit (ABE) becomes void immediately! This means zero insurance coverage. If an accident occurs, the insurer will demand all costs back directly from you. Accidents & Water Damage: How the Workshop Helps

Had a crash or someone backed into your parked scooter? To settle the claim with insurance, you'll need an official repair estimate. That's where we step in: At our Ludwigsburg Workshop, we inspect frame damage, bent handlebars, damaged brakes, or electrical faults to supply a clear repair quote for the insurance company.

By the way: if your battery dies after taking a dip in a deep puddle, don't throw it out right away. Frequently, only specific cells are damaged rather than the whole pack. A professional cell replacement saves serious cash. Read more in our article on Battery Cell Repair vs Replacement.

A formal repair estimate from a specialist workshop stops insurance adjusters from lowballing your claim settlement.

Frequently Asked Questions About E-Scooter Insurance

Do I need a driver's license to get e-scooter insurance?
No, you don't need a driver's license for e-scooters under 20 km/h in Germany. The minimum age to ride on public roads is 14 years.
Is the insurance sticker valid for exactly 1 year from the date of purchase?
No! The insurance season always runs from March 1st to the end of February the following year. If you buy coverage in July, you pay a pro-rated fee, but on March 1st you must install a new colored sticker.
What happens if the sticker on the fender peels off or gets damaged?
You should always carry your insurance certificate with you (digital or paper). If the sticker becomes illegible or detaches, your insurer can issue a replacement for a small fee.
Will insurance pay if an accident was caused by faulty brakes?
Liability covers damage to the other party, but the insurer might hold you liable if you rode with blatantly defective brakes. Have your brakes inspected regularly!
