E-Scooter Diebstahl: Warum die Pflicht-Versicherung oft nicht zahlt (und wie du dich echt schützt)

Gone – now what? Why the right insurance is worth its weight in gold

Imagine coming out of a shop in Ludwigsburg or having left your scooter at the station, and suddenly there's nothing but empty space. A truly rotten feeling, right? Unfortunately, we hear this all the time from customers at our workshop. If you only have the basic liability insurance, you're out of luck. That only pays if you cause damage to others.

For theft protection, you need partial cover (Teilkasko). And honestly: with the prices of high-quality scooters, it's almost always worth it. But be careful – not all insurances are created equal. There are a few pitfalls where insurers like to cut off the money if you're not careful.

Liability vs. Partial Cover

Liability is mandatory (hence the license plate). It protects your bank account if you bump into someone. Partial cover is voluntary but covers the current value of your scooter in case of theft. If you're wondering which scooter is even worth the effort, check out our 2025 Buying Guide.

What the insurance looks for (and what you should do)

We often see scooters that were "secured" with a cheap 10-euro lock. Insurers often say: "Too bad, your own fault." A proper lock is essential. (Common sense, right?) Many insurers even prescribe certain security classes. And very importantly: keep the receipt for the lock! Without proof that you had a decent lock, insurances like to give you a hard time after a theft.

🔒

Always use a certified U-lock or a heavy chain.

📸

Take photos of your scooter and the lock when it's locked up.

📍

A GPS tracker (like an AirTag) is great but doesn't replace a lock.

In our experience, scooters are stolen less often if they don't look 'standard'. A few individual stickers or signs of use often deter pros because reselling is harder.

Additional Insurance: Yes or No?

Vorteile
 • Protection against simple theft on the open street
 • Vandalism is often covered as well
 • Relatively low annual premiums (approx. 20-40 euros extra)
Nachteile
 • Deductible (usually 150 €) reduces the reimbursement
 • Strict requirements for the lock (certification)
 • Current value reimbursement: You never get the new price back

And if the worst has happened and the thieves didn't take your scooter but totally trashed it while trying: don't worry. In our Stuttgart workshop, we'll fix it up. Often, insurances even cover repair costs for vandalism if you have the right policy.

Does my home insurance pay too?
Usually not automatically! E-scooters are considered motor vehicles. You must explicitly include them in your home insurance, otherwise you won't get a cent in an emergency.
What do I do immediately after a theft?
1. File a report with the police (case number is mandatory!). 2. Inform the insurance within 24-48 hours. 3. Have all keys and papers ready.

Better safe than sorry – even after the check!

Got your scooter back after a theft attempt or need new security gadgets? We'll check the hardware thoroughly.
