Stop the Theft: Why a Cheap Lock is a Bad Idea
Seriously, we see it in our E-Scooter Workshop almost every week: A frustrated customer walks in because their scooter was stolen – all because it was 'secured' with a thin spiral lock that feels like it could be cut with nail scissors. (Okay, maybe not quite, but a small bolt cutter is definitely enough.)
If you park your ride at the station or in downtown Stuttgart, you've got to make it as hard as possible for thieves. An e-scooter is a prime target because it's so easy to carry away. But don't worry, we'll tell you how to chain your scooter so thieves would rather move on. After all, you want to ride, not walk – or have no ride at all.
The Workshop's Golden Rule
Invest about 10% of your scooter's purchase price in the lock. If you ride an 800€ scooter, don't skimp on the last 50€ for security!
Lock Types Comparison: What Actually Works?
Vorteile
- ✓U-Locks: Almost unbreakable and very deterrent
- ✓Handcuff Locks: Perfect for the thin stem
- ✓Folding Locks: Compact and easy to mount on the scooter
- ✓Chain Locks: Flexible for securing the scooter to lampposts
Nachteile
- ✗Spiral Locks: Only suitable as secondary security (or decoration)
- ✗Disc Locks: Easy to forget, which ruins your brakes when you pull away
Where Do You Actually Attach It?
That's the master question. Many make the mistake of only wrapping the lock around the handlebars. But guess what? On many models, you can unscrew the grips or handlebars in seconds and just slide the lock off. Pretty stupid, right? In our experience, it's best to loop the lock through the frame or – if possible – through the rear swingarm. (But watch out for the brake lines! If they break, you'll have to come back for a brake service.)
And another tip from us mechanics: always lock your scooter to a fixed object. A locked scooter that can just be carried away is useless.
