Hello! Anyone riding an e-scooter in Ludwigsburg or Stuttgart knows the chaos: sometimes a car honks, sometimes a pedestrian grumbles. But who is actually right? In the workshop, we often notice that customers are completely unsure about where they are allowed to ride. Just the other day we had a scooter in for repair whose owner was caught on the sidewalk – that gets expensive! To make sure that doesn't happen to you, we've summarized the most important rules for 2024. After all, it's not just about fines, it's about your safety!
Sidewalk vs. Road: Where does the scooter belong?
Actually, it's quite simple, but many still do it wrong: the sidewalk is absolutely off-limits for e-scooters. Period. Even if the asphalt on the road is terrible. You must use the bike lane. If there isn't one? Then hit the road. And please, don't ride in the pedestrian zone unless it's explicitly allowed. We often see bent handlebars after collisions with pedestrians – that's really unnecessary.
Important for Legality
Your scooter absolutely needs a general operating permit (ABE). Without the valid insurance sticker on the rear mudguard, you shouldn't even start. If you're unsure if your used scooter is still legal, check our guide.
Helmet Duty: Is it mandatory?
Legally, there is no helmet requirement for e-scooters up to 20 km/h. But honestly? We've seen scooters here that were completely smashed after a fall. Your head isn't as easy to repair as a mudguard.
Wearing a helmet: Yes or No?
Vorteile
- ✓Massive protection during falls
- ✓Role model in traffic
- ✓Protection from wind and weather in winter
Nachteile
- ✗You have to carry it around
- ✗Ruins your hair
- ✗Cost for a good helmet
Alcohol limit: The same strict rules apply as for cars (0.5, for beginners 0.0!).
Phone on the handlebar: Costs 100 Euro fine. Better invest that money in a proper mount.
Riding in pairs: Forbidden and dangerous for the mechanics (overload!).
