Real Winter Tires on an E-Scooter? Yes, It Makes All the Difference!
Be honest: who hasn't broken a sweat when taking a corner in the wet? When freezing temperatures and nasty cobblestones are added to the mix, it gets dangerous. In our workshop, we often see scooters with completely bald tires in winter. That's just reckless.
A good winter or all-season tire isn't just about deep tread. It's mainly about the rubber compound. Summer tires get hard as plastic in the cold and lose all grip. Winter-ready tires stay soft and literally 'claw' into the asphalt.
Solid Tires in Winter? Better Not...
We're often asked if solid tires make sense in winter. Our honest opinion: Not really. They are puncture-proof, but usually rock-hard. On ice or packed snow, they slide like ice skates. If possible, stick to pneumatic tires with decent tread.
Special Winter Tread Tires: Is It Worth It?
Vorteile
- ✓Significantly shorter braking distance on wet roads
- ✓Better lateral support in corners
- ✓Softer rubber compound at sub-zero temperatures
- ✓More confidence when riding through slush and leaves
Nachteile
- ✗Slightly higher rolling resistance
- ✗Higher wear if used throughout summer
- ✗One-time cost for the tire change
Our Recommendation for the Local Winter
If you commute a lot, you need tires that can handle changing surfaces. We currently love the all-weather tread tires for the Ninebot. They have a rugged profile but run smoothly on asphalt. But beware: changing tires on a scooter is often a nightmare. If you want to avoid the frustration, just send us your wheel.
