The ePF-2 Pro from ePowerFun is a real workhorse. But even the best scooter eventually gives in to a shard of glass or a sharp stone. If you find yourself in the middle of town with a flat, it's frustrating. At the workshop, we know: changing the tire on an ePF-2 Pro is doable, but you need some muscle (and a few tricks to keep the rim from getting trashed).
Before you start, a word of advice: Tubeless tires are stubborn. If you want to avoid sore fingers, you can always conveniently mail your wheel to us. For everyone else: here is our roadmap!
1. Preparation: Getting the wheel out
First, unscrew the wheel covers. Be careful with the rear wheel (motor): you'll need to disconnect the cables inside. We always recommend taking a photo first so you know which plug goes where later. (Trust me, it saves a lot of stress!)
Once the axle nuts are loosened, you can remove the wheel. While you're at it, check if your brakes still look good – since the wheel is out anyway, it's worth a look.
Pro Trick: The Tire Sauna Effect
Never try to mount a freezing cold tire. Put the new tire on a heater for 15 minutes or (carefully!) in warm water. When the rubber is warm, it slides over the rim much easier. In our experience, most DIY attempts fail because the rubber is too stiff.
2. Removing and Mounting (The Sweaty Phase)
Let all the air out (removing the valve core helps!).
Lubricate the tire beads with mounting paste or plenty of dish soap.
Use sturdy tire levers (no screwdrivers!) to pry the tire off.
Once the old tire is off, clean the rim thoroughly. The ePF-2 uses tubeless tires, so the edge must be perfectly clean, otherwise, it won't seal. Then press the new, warm tire on bit by bit. Important: Check the rotation direction (arrow on the tire)!
DIY vs. Workshop
Vorteile
- ✓Save a few bucks on labor
- ✓Get to know your scooter better
- ✓No waiting for appointments
Nachteile
- ✗Risk of scratching the motor rim
- ✗A compressor is often needed (a pump usually won't cut it)
- ✗High effort and frustration potential
3. The Finale: Inflation and Leak Test
Now comes the moment of truth. To get the tire to seat in the rim, you often need a powerful burst of air from a compressor. If you hear a loud 'pop', it's seated correctly. If not: check the tire pressure and make sure it sits evenly.
And if nothing works? Don't panic. We often see half-finished attempts in our Ludwigsburg workshop – we don't bite and we're happy to help!
