The Heart of Your Scooter: Why Motor Maintenance Isn't Rocket Science
Let's be honest: who actually thinks about the motor while cleaning their e-scooter? Usually, it only crosses our minds when things start making weird noises or the acceleration drops. Brushless hub motors are actually quite tough. But "maintenance-free" doesn't mean "indestructible." In our Ludwigsburg workshop, we often see motors that would have lasted much longer with just a little bit of TLC.
Dirt, moisture, and heat are the natural enemies of the windings and bearings. If you're racing through the rain, that's fine, but the motor needs attention afterward. An e-scooter motor is like a good running shoe – if you leave it sitting in the mud, it's going to get nasty eventually.
Caution during cleaning!
Never use a pressure washer on the motor! The pressure forces water past the seals and into the interior. What happens next? Rusted bearings and a risk of short circuits. A damp cloth is all you need.
Clean regularly: Wipe away dust and road grime before they damage the seals.
Avoid overheating: Give it a break during extreme climbs (especially in summer).
Cable check: Regularly inspect the cables at the motor entry – is anything rubbing?
A well-maintained motor is half the battle. Keeping your bearings clean saves you from expensive drive repairs.
Greasing bearings: DIY or Workshop?
Vorteile
- ✓Cheaper if done yourself
- ✓You get to know the tech
- ✓Done immediately without appointment
Nachteile
- ✗Risk of damaging seals
- ✗Special tools needed for wheel nuts
- ✗Potential loss of warranty if errors occur
What we frequently see are burnt-out connectors (phase plugs). This happens when contacts corrode or loosen. Then resistance increases and things get hot. If you notice your scooter jerking when starting, better stop by before the controller fries. We check that quickly in our Stuttgart/Ludwigsburg workshop.
And one more thing: Watch your tire pressure! If the tire on the motor wheel is flat, the motor has to work much harder. That puts a lot of stress on the windings. A perfectly inflated tire (check our tire tips) is motor maintenance too!
