E-Scooter im Winter: Warum 0% Akku und Streusalz dein Todesstoß sein können (Pflegetipps vom Profi)

#Winterpflege#E-Scooter Akku#Lagerschaden#Wartung

Honestly: Winter is the toughest time of year for e-scooters. We see it every spring in our workshop when the first rays of sun appear and people pull their scooters out of the basement. The sad result? The battery is deeply discharged and the bearings crunch like an old coffee grinder. But don't worry, with a few simple steps, you can get your ride safely through the cold season. (And yes, it makes a huge difference whether you just toss it in a corner or give it a quick wipe-down.)

The 0% Scenario: The Silent Death of Your Battery

Imagine putting your scooter away after the last ride in November with a nearly empty battery in a cold garage. Huge mistake! Batteries already hate the cold, but combined with a low charge, deep discharge often occurs. The electronics need a tiny bit of power even when idle. If the battery is at 0%, the voltage drops below a critical value – and boom, the protection circuit shuts it down. Then, often only an expensive battery replacement helps because the charger no longer recognizes the battery.

The Magic 50-70% Rule

We always recommend to our customers: Store the scooter at about 50 to 70 percent charge. Not full, not empty. And if possible, bring it inside your apartment. The battery feels most comfortable at room temperature.

Salt Damage: When the Bearing Says 'Hello'

If you commute in winter around Ludwigsburg or Stuttgart, you inevitably ride through slush and road salt. That stuff is aggressive as hell! It literally eats into the wheel bearings and axles. If you don't wash the salt off, everything will corrode and seize up during the winter. In spring, you'll wonder why the motor hums so loudly or the wheels are stiff. (Pro tip: A damp cloth works wonders, but please don't use a high-pressure cleaner, otherwise you'll force the water into the bearings!)

Storing Outdoors vs. Indoors

Vorteile
  • Indoors: Battery stays warm and efficient
  • Indoors: No corrosion from humidity
  • Indoors: Rubber parts don't get brittle
Nachteile
  • Outdoors: Saves space in the apartment
  • Outdoors: Less dirt in the hallway
  • Outdoors: Risk of deep discharge during frost
Can I ride my scooter in winter at all?
Sure! But keep in mind that the range drops by about 30%. And watch out for the tires – standard tires get hard and slippery in the cold.
What if my scooter is already in the basement and empty?
Bring it up immediately and plug it in! Every hour counts to avoid permanent cell damage. If it doesn't turn on at all, contact us.
