Riding E-Scooters in the Cold: Is it Even Possible?

When it gets uncomfortable outside and the thermometer creeps toward zero, many customers in our Ludwigsburg workshop ask the same question: 'Can I even use my scooter right now?'

The short answer: Sure! But – and it's a big but – you need to know what you're doing. Winter means pure stress for an e-scooter. Road salt eats into the bearings, the cold drains the battery, and wet leaves quickly turn the ride into a slide. We've summarized our best tips so you don't end up in a ditch (or with a dead battery).

Battery Enemy No. 1: Frost

Your battery hates the cold. Below 10 degrees, the internal chemistry gets sluggish. You'll notice this immediately in the range. Always take your scooter (or the battery) inside into the warm apartment at night.

Preparation is Everything (Before the First Snow Falls)

It's basically like a car: riding with summer tires in winter is just asking for trouble. We strongly recommend switching to tires with proper tread. Pneumatic tires are definitely better in winter because they provide more grip on frozen ground.

Winter Check: DIY or Workshop?

Vorteile
  • Higher safety through better visibility
  • Longer lifespan through corrosion protection
  • Grip advantage with winter tires
  • Lower puncture risk in wet conditions
Nachteile
  • Cost for winter accessories
  • Time needed for cleaning after every ride
  • Range loss cannot be entirely avoided

Salt is the silent killer for every e-scooter. If you don't wipe down your scooter after a ride, don't be surprised about rusted bolts in the spring.

Only charge the battery at room temperature – never plug it in while freezing cold!

💡

Check lights: In winter, you're basically invisible without good lights.

🧼

Clean regularly to remove aggressive road salt.

🛑

Check brakes: Every millimeter counts in the wet.

Is my e-scooter waterproof?
Usually only splash-proof. Avoid deep puddles, or you'll flood the electronics in the deck.
How do I store the scooter if I don't ride at all in winter?
Charge the battery to about 60%, store it in a dry place, and check the level every few weeks. Don't leave it empty!
