E-Scooter Akku im Winter: So verhinderst du den Kältetod und teure Reparaturen

When it's freezing outside: Your battery is a bit of a diva

It's the same story every year: as soon as temperatures in Ludwigsburg drop towards zero, our phones start ringing off the hook. Why? Because many scooters suddenly only manage half their usual range. To be honest: just like we hate cold feet, your battery absolutely despises frost.

Cold temperatures slow down the chemical reactions inside the cells. Internal resistance increases, voltage drops – and suddenly, you're stranded in the cold. But don't worry, with a few simple steps, you'll get your ride through the winter. And if things go wrong, we're here for a battery check-up.

What we see way too often: plugging a frozen scooter straight into the charger. That’s the quickest way to kill the cells. Let it warm up first.

🌡️

Room temperature is a must for charging. Never charge below 10°C!

🏠

Park your scooter indoors if possible. The basement is better than the street lamp.

🔋

Storage level: Keep charge between 50-70% during long breaks.

🚿

Watch out for road salt! It gets into every crack and causes corrosion.

Deep Discharge: The Silent Killer

If you leave your scooter in the garage all winter with an empty battery, it probably won't wake up in spring. Li-ion batteries self-discharge. If the voltage drops too low, the BMS shuts down permanently – usually a total loss.

Riding Through Winter or Storing?

Vorteile
  • Stay mobile and avoid crowded buses
  • Regular cycles keep the battery 'active'
  • Brakes don't rust from sitting too long
Nachteile
  • Significantly less range (can't cheat physics)
  • Lots of cleaning due to salt and slush
  • Higher risk of falls (check our all-weather tires!)
Does frost damage the battery permanently?
Short-term parking is usually fine, but permanent freezing reduces capacity. Bring it inside at night – your wallet will thank you.
How often should I recharge in winter?
If you're not riding, check every 4 weeks. It should never hit 0%. Keeping it between 50% and 70% is the 'sweet spot' for storage.
