E-Scooters & Weather: What Your Scooter Can Really Handle
Let's be honest: Most of us use e-scooters to get from A to B quickly and dry. But what happens when the clouds burst? In our workshop, we often see the aftermath of 'submerged' rides – from seized bearings to total electronic failure due to moisture. While many manufacturers claim splash resistance, there's a huge difference between a light drizzle and cruising through deep puddles.
It's actually like a car: a little maintenance determines if your ride is scrap after two years or still rolls like new. If you maintain your e-scooter correctly, you'll have much less stress during autumn.
Pro Tip: The IP Protection Class
Check your scooter's IP code. IPX4 means 'splash resistant'. That's fine for light drizzle. IPX5 can handle a bit more, but very few are truly 'waterproof'. If you're unsure, just ask us at the shop!
Avoiding Grip Loss: Tire Choice for Wet Conditions
Wet city streets can get incredibly slippery, especially on cobblestones or tram tracks. If your tires are bald, you're basically riding on soap. For the wet and cold season, we definitely recommend switching to proper all-weather tires. The rubber compound is softer and grips the asphalt much better.
One more thing: Tire pressure! In winter, you can go slightly lower (just a tiny bit!) to increase the contact patch. But be careful, too little pressure will kill your inner tube. If that happens, check out our tire mail-in service.
Riding in Winter: Yes or No?
Vorteile
- ✓No sweating like on a bike
- ✓Independent of train delays
- ✓Fresh air builds resilience
Nachteile
- ✗Battery range drops significantly in cold
- ✗Road salt corrodes metal parts
- ✗Increased risk of falling on ice
The Battery Killer: Cold and Storage
Never leave your scooter in the car or outside overnight in freezing temperatures. The battery is like a human: it prefers room temperature.
We see it all the time: Customers come in during spring and the battery is dead. Why? Because it deep-discharged over winter. When riding in the cold, you'll notice power drops faster. That's normal (just chemistry). Important: Never charge the battery immediately after a ride when it's freezing. Let it reach room temp first. If the range drops massively, an battery check or replacement might be necessary.
